Like many artists I found myself with limited funds for
framing and when I lived in Maine I would scour Flea markets for used
frames. Often they would need repair and my solution was to paint and
decorate them so the repairs wouldn't show. I started with traditional New
England techniques such as feather painting, thumb printing, faux finishes
etc. It became a kind of trade mark. When I moved back to the Islands in
1990, and started painting tropical themes, I was so used to painted
frames on my work that I adapted my northern techniques to my Caribbean
art.
I now paint each frame for a particular print. They are
not
interchangeable. The blues are usually pulled out of the sky or water colors and I mix each color to match the flowers or some other element.
Since each one is done individually I can easily accommodate a clients
wish for me to emphasize some color or leave out another.
Usually the backgrounds are blue but certain prints like "Caribe
Fire" and "Caribbean Sunset" look dramatic in frames with a
Chinese red background. Evening song often is framed in predominately green frame.
